Promo Vignettes
Here are three capsule descriptions of Bob’s music, in different
lengths, that can be used for press previews, promotional flyers,
calendars, program books, etc. For more extensive information, see
Biography and Recordings.
1. Bob Norman’s unusual songs, gentle wit, intricate guitar
and harmonica work, and passionate singing have charmed folk audiences
across the country for 27 years now. According to Pete Seeger, Bob
writes “warm, wonderful, very singable songs that capture
the bittersweet lives of working people in a big city—the
people who will not give up hope, love, and laughter.” The
son of a symphony orchestra conductor and a former editor of Sing
Out!, the nation's leading folk song magazine, Bob manages
to fuse such varied influences as blues, country, contemporary folk,
and classical guitar into a fascinating evening’s entertainment.
Bob’s songs have been sung or recorded by Seeger, bluesman
Eric Bibb, Argentinian poet/songwriter Bernardo Palombo, and midwest
folk-rocker Cooker John, among others. “Like all good songwriters,”
says the New Yorker magazine, “Norman can distinguish the
romantic from the sentimental; his bittersweet accounts of urban
life are blissfully free of sappiness.” Says the Princeton
Packet: “His songs and voice are warm and inviting, autobiographical
but universal; they celebrate life’s simple pleasures while
tackling bigger issues.”

Sound Requirements & Stage Plot
Bob’s requirements are simple: A vocal/harmonica mike and
a guitar mike. Bob performs standing, and boom mikes are best. Since
he doesn’t use fingerpicks, Bob depends on the soundperson
to boost the guitar mike during fingerpicked numbers and bring it
back down during flatpicked numbers. Bob can play his guitar into
a direct box, but he prefers the acoustic sound. If a skilled soundperson
can achieve a nice balance of both (with emphasis on the acoustic),
it may be worth a try. Bob’s son Sam often accompanies him
on guitar. Sam needs only a guitar mike and can also plug in if
necessary. Sam performs standing, to Bob’s right. Bob needs
a small, high table or stool to his left for harmonicas, water bottle,
and other accessories. Monitors are very welcome! Click to download
